Five years ago I started this blog as a way to share the healthy modifications I was starting to make to meals with my friends and family. The husband and I had gone through a season of cleaning up our diets, going through a few rounds of P90X, and were feeling healthier and stronger. About the same time, I started to get frustrated with my seemingly complacent, go-with-the-flow lifestyle. I had found myself in a career I was really good at, with coworkers I loved, and lived in a neighborhood with a great group of friends. But I felt stuck. I hadn’t planned on ending up where I was; it just happened as a result of choices and moves and life.
Today, I am super excited to share that because I acted on that restlessness and did something to change the frustration I felt, I am on a path to a new career that I cannot wait to begin. After months of soul-searching, job shadowing, researching, and talking with friends, I decided to go back to school to become a Registered Dietitian. A year of pre-requisite science classes, and a year and a half getting a second bachelor’s degree while traveling non-stop for work was worth every single long night teaching myself microbiology and organic chemistry, every cold networking call to get clinical experience, every day of PTO taken for exams, and even every weekend doing anatomy dissections in my kitchen. It feels so good to finally be able to share this journey publicly, especially since it is not over yet.
Last month, I resigned from my job in event management. The journey as a dietetic intern starts this summer. And hopefully a year from now, I can share the success of passing the national exam to become an RD. I am grateful every day for the few friends who have known and walked along side me to this point. I would never have gotten here without their support, their hands-on assistance, and their encouragement. I am excited to be able to share this next step a little more publicly, so get ready for some more in-depth nutrition posts. I am looking forward to using this space to share my experiences and expertise as I go through school.
Thank you to those of you who have been reading from the beginning. Having this space to share my passion for nutrition, my love of food, and my gift of hospitality gives me the purpose and excitement I was looking for back when I started this journey. Here’s to one more year and finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
