What a weekend! Despite everyone thinking we were crazy, running the Walt Disney World Goofy Challenge is definitely one decision I am so glad I made. Disney sure knows how to put on a race!
The half was crowded, humid, and a little disappointing, but the full was everything you expect from a Disney race. Running down main street, through Cinderella’s castle in Magic Kingdom, around Expedition Everest in Animal Kingdom, round and round the track at ESPN Wide World of Sports, down the middle of Hollywood Studios, along the Boardwalk, and finishing in Epcot. Bands, choirs, characters, costumes, and an awesome crowd helped keep the excitement all the way through mile 26. It was hard to get frustrated and tired with so much excitement going on the whole way through.
The game plan was to do the half slow and steady, which was necessary considering the insane humidity. While we were a little sore and tired Sunday (2:45 am wake ups to make the bus both days!), my training paid off and I had a strong and steady race. My feet got super sore by mile 18 from not being used to running on asphalt for so many miles, but mentally and physically I was doing great. The last few miles from Hollywood Studios through the Boardwalk and down to Epcot was full of excitement from the crowds and knowing we were almost done. Getting a high five from Mickey at the finish line was just icing on the cake. A whopping 5 minute PR was nice too! I guess I just need to run on tired legs in order to have a great marathon.
If you’re crazy and looking for a challenge, run Goofy! It is definitely worth the pain, money, and lack of sleep!
